If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to destinations like the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment, all rolled into one. Some cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. Cruising means seeing the world while unpacking only once. Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids and teens — all for free. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship for you.

Cruise Ship Crew Member Disembarkations

Travel and travel planning are being disrupted by the worldwide spread of the coronavirus. A waiter in the crowded cruise ship passageway approached the isolated passenger with a tray of food, two glasses of juice, plastic gloves on his hands — and a white table napkin across his face. The napkin, tied over his mouth like a bandanna on a bank robber in an old western, was presumably supposed to protect the crew member aboard the Costa Luminosa from the spread of the coronavirus, which had already sickened three passengers.

This was on Sunday, March 15, the first day that the crew began wearing gloves and shields over their mouths. A picture snapped by a passenger and circulating on social media encapsulated the missteps by a cruise company that seemed to be improvising its coronavirus response, even after the high-profile disasters that left hundreds sickened on two other ships, the Diamond Princess and the Grand Princess, owned by its corporate parent, Carnival Cruises.

Most cruise ships disembarked passengers in March and April, as cruising wound down due to the pandemic. It was difficult for crew members to.

Traditions dating to seafarer days centuries ago to bring good luck remain alive and well with coins for “divine protection,” godmother blessings for new ships, no whistling in the wheelhouse and spilled rum for Neptune. And for good measure, step aboard the ship with your right foot first. They don’t like to rock the boat, so to speak. So even in the 21st century, with modern cruise ships sailing guests around the world in extraordinary comfort and guided with the latest in navigational equipment, some traditions linger, dating back to rugged early seafarer days.

Dutch Captain Emiel de Vries, of Holland America Line’s sparkling new 2,passenger Koningsdam, said one of the first things he looks for on a ship is a certain bottle of water. Later it is typically displayed in the captain’s office near the bridge.

Since the No Sail Order was extended on April 15, and extended a second time on July 16, CDC has worked with cruise lines to help thousands of crew members return home safely. Safe disembarkation of crew has included a requirement for cruise lines to submit a signed attestation and use non-commercial transportation for their crew members.

The list on this page provides the latest information on cruise lines that have submitted the signed attestations that received CDC approval to safely disembark crew using noncommercial transportation. This list is updated daily Monday through Friday.

Cruise ships are organized much like floating hotels, with a complete hospitality staff in addition to the usual ship’s crew. It is not uncommon.

Please refresh the page and retry. T he global cruise industry has been hit hard by the Covid pandemic. Amid the challenges of getting passengers and crew home, ships have been left to float empty when they should have been full of people enjoying holidays at sea. This week saw the Norwegian cruise line, Hurtigruten, halt expedition cruises after at least 40 crew members and several guests aboard Roald Amundsen tested positive for Covid And while many countries are beginning to open up to tourism — and Europe is seeing a slow resumption of cruising — many lines continue to delay their returns.

Updated guidance from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in July dealt a major blow to Britons hoping to sail, advising against all cruise ship travel. On July 16, the FCO revised its advice once again and gave the green light to river cruises , which are considered lower risk than their ocean counterparts, due to shorter itineraries and fewer passengers on board, meaning new health and safety protocols are easier to manage.

I know that everyone is working around the clock to adapt to the new landscape we find ourselves in, and are making every effort to keep customers informed with updated information, even as developments are seeming to occur so rapidly. Our customers should feel assured that our industry remains focused on their safety, health and well-being. Viking was the first cruise operator to announce it was suspending its river and ocean cruises for a temporary period on March 11, closely followed by Princess Cruises.

Outbreaks of infectious diseases can happen on cruise ships because people spend time close together and with travelers from many countries. The current scientific evidence suggests that cruise ships pose a greater risk of COVID transmission than other settings because of the high population density onboard on ships, which are typically more densely populated than cities or most other living situations.

Other factors likely contributing to onboard transmission are crew living and working in close quarters in a partially enclosed environment where social distancing may prove challenging, even with a limited number of people onboard. Additionally, mild illnesses and asymptomatic infections make case detection and isolation and quarantine practices based on clinical presentation alone challenging. Thus, covert spread of infection among crew may keep the virus circulating from one voyage to the next.

Disease can spread between ships when crew members from a ship with an outbreak transfer to other ships. Infected people may also travel on cruise ships between countries. For these reasons, outbreaks of COVID on cruise ships pose a risk for rapid spread of disease beyond the voyage and into communities across the globe. The COVID pandemic is constantly evolving, and aggressive efforts are needed to contain the spread. CDC will continue to evaluate and update our recommendations as the situation evolves.

Passengers, crew and investors sue world’s three major cruise lines alleging mishandling of coronavirus outbreaks. Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines, which together account for nearly 70 percent of the global cruise industry’s revenues, are facing an unprecedented legal storm after coronavirus outbreaks on board their ships left thousands ill and many people dead.

Those suing the operators include a US woman who lost her husband, a group of investors who took a financial hit and a Bulgarian crew member who was forced to take a hour journey home despite being sick with COVID, the disease caused by the new virus. More than 3, people on 43 ships have fallen ill from the coronavirus since Carnival’s Diamond Princess ship was quarantined off the port of Yokohama in Japan in early February.

Some cruise lines had tentatively set plans to start sailing again in August, hoped that cruise activity could resume as soon as possible after that date, crew and the communities we bring our ships to in order to maintain.

This week, Royal Caribbean announced it expects to resume sailing the high seas as early as August, but the company’s CEO says nothing is definite. While the cruise line has said it will not resume sailings before the end of July, Fain clarified that the August 1 start date is not confirmed and is subject to change, based on health conditions and government restrictions in the coming months. Whenever cruise ships reopen for business, there will likely be drastic changes onboard — which are still in brainstorm phases as authorities continue to learn about the coronavirus.

Fain suspects that capacity will be limited and self-service buffets have not been definitely eliminated, but their status is up in the air. As for social distancing he noted that a large cruise ship capable of carrying thousands of passengers will make social distancing easier. Princess Cruises extended its service suspension through the summer.

Some cruises will remain on pause even through the fall. As the cruise industry aims to reopen later this year, they are considering questions like how to isolate a passenger should they become infected with COVID and how to stock ships with medical and disinfecting supplies.
